GetUp and Avaaz Networks
If you are Australian and want to make it more ethical and sustainable, you can make your voice count on an ongoing basis, by joining GetUp, an independent, not-for-profit community campaigning group, which uses the internet to empower Australians to have their say on important national and sometimes even international issues.
In case you are not Australian, but hold the same values at heart, you can join the Avaaz world network www.avaaz.org/en with the same objectives. Avaaz has the website in thirteen languages, and has taken more than 9.6 million worthwhile actions since 2007.
GetUp receives no political party or government funding, and every campaign it runs is entirely supported by voluntary donations.
To read more about GetUp, join and/or make a donation, please visit www.getup.org.au
I consider that joining GetUp is a great gift to one's own Self and to our common better tomorrow.
Below is the end of 2008 message from GetUp, summarizing our achievements and inviting us to continue in 2009.

Subject: You were great in '08; here's to a fine '09
This week our movement reached a milestone. We hit 300,000 members!
You are part of the largest political movement in the nation - with more members than all political parties in the country combined. Your actions and contributions are not only making real advances on a range of important issues, they are also reshaping the way we conceive of democratic participation in Australia.
So we just wanted to end the year by saying: thank you!
Just last night the news lead with the story of another campaign victory - reform of our anti-terror laws and agencies including the complete removal of unjust sedition laws. From outlining your vision for the new Parliament and adorning its lawn with candles for the Apology at the start of the year, to finally winning rights for same-s-x couples and broadcasting a headline-grabbing climate TV ad to end it, 2008 has been full of victories for progressive Australians.
And 2009? We know that governments, however well-intentioned, will only soar as high as you and I demand. Luckily, we have the community, the tools, the desire and the energy to work together and do just that. We can't wait to work with you in the new year.
Whether you are new to GetUp or have been with us on this journey a long time, thanks for making it happen. You have created a movement the likes of which this country has never seen, and we thought you might like to take a moment to reflect on some of the achievements we've won together:
See you in 2009!
Wishing you a very happy new year,
- The GetUp team
PS - Together we've raised over $180,000 for our new climate change ad in less than a week! Your incredible response has allowed us to purchase national coverage during the Boxing Day Cricket Test. Our ad will show on day three of the Test - Sunday December 28, between 1pm and 6pm.
